SPEAKER: David Lane

“Evoking the vast arch of our own Milky Way galaxy while blending the earthly and possibly Martian like landscapes with the cosmos”

David will be discussing how he first got interested in Astrophotography.

He will talk about the equipment he uses to capture his Milky Way photography during his travels to the most desolate regions of the USA.

Then finally Dave will be showing and explaining how he photographed some of his amazing images that have been awarded the NASA Picture Of The Day.

Dave will also be showing some of the astronomy products that he sells online https://www.davelaneastrophotography.com/about/

Biography:

David Lane (often known as Dave Lane) is a world renowned American "landscape astrophotographer" who specializes in photographing natural landmarks and seamlessly stitching them together with panoramic views of the Milky Way galaxy.

Key Highlights:

  • "Milky Way Fusion": Lane pioneered a technique he calls Milky Way fusion, which involves blending deep-space processing techniques with wide-field Milky Way and landscape photography.

  • Global Recognition: His work has been featured in major publications and platforms such as Time, the Huffington Post, and NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), where he has had multiple images archived.

  • Dark Sky Focus: Originally based in Kansas City, Lane later relocated his photography operations to Kanab, Utah, specifically drawn to the region's exceptional dark skies and dramatic southwest scenery.

  • Community Contributions: He served as a trustee for the nonprofit Stellar Vista Observatory in Kanab, working to create educational astronomy opportunities for students and the public.

  • The Craft: His work is highly labor-intensive; a single final image can take 15 to 20 hours of post-processing, combining, and editing over 40 individual exposures.

You can view his extensive galleries and find information on his photography workshops via the David Lane Astrophotography
