More info on the photo I took tonight of Asteroid 2005 YU55. Taken with a 10 inch Newtonian telescope, Canon 60D DSLR, 30 seconds at ISO 1600, taken at 7:47PM according to my camera’s internal clock. Field of view is approximately 66 x 43 arc minutes. I measure the trail at 3.6 arc minutes long. Would need to spend more time on it to get it exact. The FOV image is from The Sky 5 program with North to the lower right. The icon of 2005 YU55 is off slightly because I cannot enter all the decimal places making an error of a couple arc minutes.
I took a lot of images, including a bunch at 15 seconds and they have the asteroid traveling from one side of the frame to the other. I plan on trying to make a video of it later this week.
Video completed. Please click on movie icon inside photo above to run the mpeg (set video to “loop” for best results).
This video uses WMV, or Windows Media Video by default in Internet Explorer (IE) and works just fine without additional effort. If you are not using IE, either enable the appropriate viewing plugin., or do a “save as” to your desktop and “open with” WMV.
